Top 7 Houston burgers
Houston is a city that knows how to do burgers right. Otherwise, what would all those good cattle be good for? From classic cheeseburgers (beef or bison!) under a bridge, to gourmet creations beside a museum, there's something for every burger lover in this vibrant culinary scene. As a dedicated burger aficionado, I’ve tasted my way through the best the city has to offer. Here are my top 7 Houston burgers, ranked in descending order to build up to the ultimate burger experience:
Five Guys Burgers
Known for its fresh, customizable burgers, Five Guys is a staple in the Houston burger scene. With juicy patties, a variety of toppings, and perfectly cooked fries, it’s a go-to spot for a reliably delicious burger experience. **My favorite burger there is a bacon cheeseburger with regular fries (I always go for the regular fries, and many times omit them entirely to focus on the burger itself- always aside an ice-cold beer). Although Five Guys could fall into the QSR category (i.e., Quick-service restaurant), it’s still a solid candidate on my list!
Bistro at The Menil
The Bistro at The Menil offers a unique twist on the classic burger, combining high-quality ingredients with a touch of sophistication. Enjoy your burger in a serene setting surrounded by art and culture, making it a truly delightful dining experience. The menu offers four burger presentations, where **my favorite is The Classic (almost always the case). I love how they’re typically served with home fries, Brava sauce, and cornichons (a fancy term for pickles!)
Del Frisco's Grille
Del Frisco's Grille takes the burger to a gourmet level with their signature prime beef patty, topped with luxurious ingredients. The combination of flavors and the upscale ambiance make this a must-visit for burger enthusiasts looking for something special. Del Frisco’s had a location at Shops at Arrive (formerly WestAve) – the luxury apartments where the Tootsie’s store is at – so these days the only nearby location is in The Woodlands. But I’d recommend a trip up there (unless you’re already there!), to give that towering burger a try.
Stanton's City Bites
Stanton's City Bites is a hidden gem that offers some of the best burgers in Houston. Their burgers are packed with flavor, featuring thick, juicy patties and creative toppings. It’s a nofrills spot that delivers big on taste and satisfaction. **My recommendation here is the Spicy Chipotle, as you’ll see I typically go for the “firey” burgers. Served with house chipotle mayo, house chipotle butter, jalapeno jack cheese, grilled onions, bacon, lettuce, tomatoes on a jalapeno bun, it goes best with an ice-cold Pacifica or Modelo lager, which they typically have in stock (you’ll see a beverage fridge on your right when you’re ordering). Their Washington East / Arts District location has been there since the Fifties, and it’s quite intact. It has that dreamy American diner vibe, a fantastic bar with black leather benches, and is a treat of Americana for the senses. Pro-tip: don’t park across the street, it’s a Police station and you will be ticketed!
Hopdoddy Burger
Hopdoddy Burger is known for its inventive burger creations out of Austin, TX, and high quality ingredients. Each burger is made with care, featuring unique flavor combinations that keep you coming back for more. It’s a top choice for those seeking a fresh and exciting burger experience. They bake their own buns and although the burgers are on the smallish end of the scale, they’re packed with flavor. **My recommendation is El Diablo, a fiery burger loaded with jalapenos, chipotle sauce and bonafide sliced habaneros, responsible for the heat. Be sure to grab an ice-cold beer on draft to down El Diablo!
Bubba's Texas Burger Shack
Literally located under a bridge (at Westpark and under the Westpark Tollway bridge), Bubba's is a Houston favorite, serving up mouth-watering burgers that are as big on taste as they are in size. Their classic, hearty burgers are perfect for satisfying any burger craving, with a laid-back atmosphere that makes you feel right at home. You can customize your burger at the counter (i.e., there’s a trailer with the kitchen and the counter inside), and you’ll dine “al fresco” under the Houston heat (or cold!) of the day. My favorite is a doublebeef burger with American cheese and jalapenos! I can’t feel happier eating that burger under that bridge, and breathing in what this incredible city is about!!
Lankford's Grocery & Market
Topping the list is Lankford's Grocery & Market, a true Houston institution. Their burgers are legendary, featuring perfectly seasoned patties and an array of delicious toppings. The casual, nostalgic vibe of the place adds to the charm, making it the ultimate burger destination in Houston, although many could disagree. **My absolute favorite is the Firehouse Burger, a half-pound patty topped with Habanero Mustard Sauce, Cayenne Butter, Jalapenos, Lettuce, Tomato, Pickles, and Onions on a Brioche Bun. Although he passed away a few years back, it was a pleasure and a privilege to interact with the owner, who was typically at the counter greeting customers. Pro-tip: be sure to take cash, that’s the only payment they’ll take!
